Four Sang’gres: Four Evangelist

Written by: Melisse Yutuc

“Matthew the Evangelist is symbolized by an angel. It represents Jesus’ Incarnation, and so Christ’s human nature. This signifies that Christians should use their reason for salvation.” Alena went through an incarnation-like transformation when she became a turtle then back to her own flesh again. She also holds the gem of water, the gem of wisdom that requires reason. She of all the sisters, yearns for the foundation of human nature – love. The angel can also be referred to the mermaid of Adamya to which her gem originally resided in – a being that resembles a human and at the same time, resembles that of another animal such as a fish or a bird or another entity.

“Mark the Evangelist is symbolized by a lion – a figure of courage and monarchy. The lion also represents Jesus’ resurrection and Christ as king. This signifies that Christians should be courageous on the path of salvation.” When or if Pirena is redeemed, she will be resurrected as a better citizen of Encantadia – learning from her past mistakes and sins. She of all the sisters, wanted the Lirean crown the most, a sign of monarchy. She holds the gem of fire, which resembles passion that enables courage – her bravery also allowed her to achieve all her schemes. The lion can also be referred to the dragon of Hathoria to which her gem originally resided in – a being that is ferocious but mighty, greedy but strong and brave.

“Luke the Evangelist, symbolized by a ox or bull – a figure of sacrifice, service and strength. It represents Jesus’ sacrifice in His Passion and Crucifixion. The ox signifies that Christians should be prepared to sacrifice themselves in following Christ.” Danaya of all the sisters, is the most loyal to Amihan and Lireo – willing to serve her Hara and sacrifice herself just to make sure good prevails. She also holds the gem of earth, the gem of being and strength. She is epitome of service – in all aspects, as a fighter, sister, citizen, and follower. The ox or bull can also be referred to the “sarangay” of Sapiro to which her gem originally resided in – a being that resembles brute strength.

“John the Evangelist, is symbolized by an eagle – a figure of the sky, and believed by Christian scholars to be able to look straight into the sun. He goes on to describe many things with a “higher” christology than the other three gospels; it represents Jesus’ Ascension, and Christ’s divine nature. This symbolizes that Christians should look on eternity without flinching as they journey towards their goal of union with God.” Amihan’s fall was one of the most climactic and iconic events in the story – but when or if she fulfills her prophecy of bringing down Hathoria, she will ascend back to her rightful throne and reach a level higher than all of her sisters. She would have demanded a higher sense of achievement and respect as Queen. She also holds the gem of air, the gem of benevolence that entails a sense of divinity. She of all the sisters, has looked upon Emre for guidance and has battled a goddess Ether – almost like looking straight at the sun. The eagle can also be referred to the pixie of Lireo to which her gem originally resided in – a being of air.

Parang LOTR o Narnia ang peg, there are links to Christianity, coincidence or not.
